In the market for a brand new bed? Here are some tips to help you pick out the perfect mattress to give you a restful night of sleep.

On Firmness. There is some evidence that a medium-firm mattress can help those with lower back pain. Too firm, you end up with pressure points at the hips and shoulders. Too soft, you can't shift as easily, and your body develops aches, numbness, and tingling. Ideally, you want your mattress to support the spine while allowing it to curve naturally. Older folks may also benefit from a softer surface, which causes less skin compression and thus less pressure on their typically more sensitive skin.

  1. A Solid Foundation. When you begin to shop for a mattress, make sure you check the state of your existing box spring. If it's still in solid shape, you can keep it. If you notice rips, cracks, wraps, or it wiggles a bit too much, pick up a new one.

  2. Settle In. Come prepared to kick back and relax awhile. Wear loose clothing and shoes you can easily remove. Spend at least 15 minutes on your bed of choice in the store - the salesperson expects it. Spend at least 5 minutes on your back and each side (add your front in if you sleep that way as well). Resting for just a moment doesn't tell you how your body will settle into the bed. 5 minutes lets you see where the pressure points will be and if the firmness works for you.

  3. Bring a Buddy. Well, maybe not -any- buddy, but do take your partner along if at all possible. You both have to sleep in the new bed, after all. You both need to know if it's comfortable for you. When testing out the bed, make sure to wiggle a bit so you can see how it impacts the comfort of your partner.

  4. Update Every Decade. Beds have a lifespan. The warranty lasts ten years, typically, with a gradually increasing deductible granted for a replacement. Your bed is likely ready for recycling when you've reached 8-10 years. Older beds wear down and provide less support, often to the detriment of a proper night's rest.
