The size of the bed that you place in a room is extremely important. If the bed is too large, the room can seem smaller than it really is. If the bed is too small, it may make the room seem overwhelmingly small or may not make adequate use of the space. But how do you know what bed is the right size for your space? Here are a few clues.
30 Inches on Both Sides of the Bed
As a standard rule of thumb, designers recommend having at least 30 inches of space on both the left and right side of the bed. This helps ensure you can adequately move around the bed. Measure the length of the room and then determine how much space you have to work with. If you don't have 30 inches on both sides of the bed, the bed is likely too large for the space you have.
The Size of Any Furniture You Already Have
If you plan on keeping any furniture in the space that you already own, you need to take into account the size of that furniture. For example, night stands can typically measure 20 to 40 inches in length. If you own nightstands that are 40 inches in length, you need to account for these dimensions when selecting a bed. This may mean that you need more than 30 inches on both sides of the bed. A larger dresser, or multiple large dressers may also impact the length of bed that you can place in the space. As such, always keep in mind the size and dimensions of any furniture you already have when selecting a new bed size.
The Positioning of Doors and Windows
The last factor to keep in mind when figuring out what size bed you should place in a room is the positioning of doors and windows in your space. A bed should never impede upon a doors ability to open or close or block windows. As such, measure how much space you have between windows and doors to find the perfect sized bed for you.
